(11) “What is the matter with you?” he shouted.
“당신한테 무슨 일이 난 거야?” 그가 소리쳤다.
    
“Look at the mess you’ve made on the carpet!”
“당신이 카펫에 어지른 지저분한 것 좀 봐요.”
  
“Your hair!” the mother was screaming, pointing a finger at her husband.
“당신 머리카락이오!" 엄마가 그녀의 남편을 손가락으로 가리키며 비명을 지르고 있었다.
    
“Look at your hair! What have you done to your hair?”
“당신의 머리카락을 보세요! 당신 머리에 무슨 짓을 한 거예요?”
  
“What’s wrong with my hair?” he said.
내 머리에 뭐가 잘못됐어? 그가 말했다.
    
“Oh my dad, what have you done to your hair?” the son shouted.
“어머 아빠, 아빠 머리를 어떻게 하신 거예요?” 아들이 소리쳤다.
    
A noisy scene was building up nicely in the breakfast room.
시끄러운 장면이 아침식사 자리에서 아주 점점 더해가고 있었다.
    
(12) Matilda said nothing.
마틸다는 아무 말도 하지 않았다.
    
She simply sat there admiring the wonderful effect of her own work.
그녀는 그녀 자신이 저지른 놀라운 결과에 감탄하면서 그곳에 그냥 앉아있었다.
    
Mr Wormwood’s fine black hair was now a dirty silver.
Wormwood 씨의 멋진 검정 머리카락은 이제 지저분한 은색이 되었다.
    
“You’ve.... dyed it!” screamed the mother.
“당신이 그걸 염색했군요!” 엄마가 괴성을 질렀다.

“Why did you do it, you fool! It looks absolutely horrible! You look like a freak!”
“당신 왜 그랬어요, 바보 같으니라고! 정말 끔찍해 보여요! 당신이 괴짜처럼 보인다고요!”
  
“What are you talking about?” the father yelled, putting both hands to his hair.
“뭐라고 하는 거야?” 아버지가 그의 머리로 양손을 올리며 소리쳤다.
    
“I certainly have not dyed it!”
분명히 나는 그것을 염색한 적이 없어!
    
“What do you mean I’ve dyed it? What’s happened to it? Or is this a stupid joke?”
“내가 염색을 했다니 무슨 뜻이야? 무슨 일이 났어? 아니면 이거 말도 안 되는 농담이야?”
  
His face was turning pale green, the color of sour apples.
그의 얼굴은 시큼한 사과 색깔인 창백한 녹색으로 변해가고 있었다.
    
“You must have dyed it , dad.” the son said.
“염색하신 게 틀림없어요, 아빠.” 아들이 말했다.
    
“It’s the same color as mum’s only much dirtier looking.
“그건 그냥 훨씬 더 지저분해 보이는 엄마의 머리카락 같은 색이에요”
 
“Of course he’s dyed it!” the mother cried
“물론 그는 염색을 했고말고!” 엄마가 외쳤다.
    
“It can’t change color all by itself!
“그건 저절로 색이 변할 수 없지!
    
What on earth were you trying to do, make yourself look handsome or something?
도대체 당신은 뭘 하려고, 당신 자신을 잘생겨 보이거나 뭐 그러려고 한 거예요?
    
You look like someone’s grandmother gone wrong!”
당신은 누군가의 망가진 할머니처럼 보인다고요!"
  
“Get me a mirror!”
“거울을 내게 가져와!”
  
(13) The mother’s handbag lay on a chair at the other end of the table.
엄마의 핸드백이 테이블의 다른 쪽 끝에 있는 의자 위에 놓여있었다.
    
She opened the bag and got out a powder compact that had a small round mirror on the inside of the lid.
그녀는 가방을 열어서 뚜껑의 안쪽에 작은 동그란 거울이 있는 파우더 콤팩트를 꺼냈다.
    
She opened the compact and handed it to her husband.
그녀는 콤팩트를 열어서 그것을 그녀의 남편에게 전해주었다.
    
He grabbed it and held it before his face and in doing so spilled most of the powder all over the front of his fancy jacket.
그는 그것을 쥐고 그의 얼굴 앞으로 그것을 들었는데 그렇게 하면서 그 가루의 대부분을 그의 고급 재킷의 앞 전체에 쏟았다.
    
“Be careful!” screamed the mother.
“조심해요!” 엄마가 비명을 질렀다.
    
“Now look what you’ve done!
“이제 당신이 한 짓을 봐요!
    
That’s my best Elizabeth Arden face powder!”
그건 내 제일 좋은 Elizabeth Arden 페이스 파우더(화장품)란 말이에요!”
  
“Oh my god!” yelled the father, staring into the little mirror.
“오 세상에!” 작은 거울을 뚫어져라 보면서 아버지가 소리쳤다.
    
“What’s happened to me!
“내게 무슨 일이 벌어진 거야!
    
I look terrible!
내가 끔찍해 보이는군!
    
l look just like you gone wrong!
내가 꼭 망가진 당신 같아!
    
I can’t go down to the garage and sell cars like this!
내가 이렇게 하고 차고에 내려가서 차를 팔수는 없어!
    
How did it happen?”
어떻게 그런 일이 벌어졌지?“
  
He stared around the room, first at the mother, then at the son, then at Matilda.
그는 처음에는 엄마를, 그런 다음 아들을, 그러고 나서 마틸다를 향해 방안을 둘러다 보았다.

 

“How could it happened?” he yelled.
“어떻게 그런 일이 생길 수 있었지?” 그가 소리쳤다.
