(14) “I imagine, daddy,” Matilda said quietly, “that you weren’t looking very hard and you simply took mummy’s bottle of hair stuff off the shelf instead of your own.”
“제가 상상 하건대요, 아빠,” 마틸다가 조용히 말했다, “아빠는 아주 심해 보이지 않고, 그냥 아빠의 것 대신에 선반에서 엄마의 헤어 제품 병을 가져갔을 뿐인 것 같아요”
 
“Of course that’s what happened!” the mother cried.
“뭔가 일이 생긴 건 확실하지!” 엄마가 외쳤다.
 
“Well really Harry, how stupid can you be?
글쎄 정말 Harry, 어떻게 그렇게 멍청할 수 있죠?
  
Why didn’t you read the label before you started splashing the stuff all over you!
당신이 그것을 당신한테 온통 뿌리기 시작하기 전에 왜 당신은 상표를 읽지 않았냐고요!
  
Mine’s terribly strong.
내 것은 지독하게 강해요.
  
I’m only meant to use one tablespoon of it in a whole basin of water and you’ve put it all over your head!
나는 물 한 대야에 그것 1스푼을 사용한다고 알고 있는데 당신은 그걸 당신 머리 전체에 범벅을 했어요.
  
It’ll probably take all your hair off in the end!
그건 아마 결국 당신의 모든 머리카락을 빠지게 할 거예요!
  
Is your scalp beginning to burn, dear?”
당신의 두피가 타들어가기 시작하지 않나요, 여보?“
 
“You mean I’m going to lose all my hair?” the husband yelled.
“당신 말은 내가 내 머리카락을 모두 잃을 거란 거야?” 남편이 소리 질렀다.
 
“I think you will,” the mother said.
“나는 그럴 거라 생각해요,” 엄마가 말했다.
  
“Peroxide is a very powerful chemical.
“과산화수소수는 아주 강력한 화학물질이에요.
  
Even when it was diluted like I use it,” the mother told him,
심지어 내가 그것을 사용하는 것처럼 그것이 희석되었을 때도,“
 
“it makes my hair fall out, so only god knows what’s going to happen to you.
“그건 내 머리카락이 빠지게 만들어요, 그러니까 오직 신만이 당신에게 무슨 일이 벌어질지 알아요.
  
I’m surprised it didn’t take the top of your head off!”
나는 그것이 당신의 머리 꼭대기를 뜯어가지 않은 게 놀랍네요!“-
 
(15) “What shall I do?” cried the father.
“내가 어떡해야 하지?” 아버지가 외쳤다.
  
“Tell me quick what to do before it starts falling out!”
그게 빠지기 시작하기 전에 무엇을 해야 할지 내게 어서 말해“
 
Matilda said, “If I were you, I’d wash it with soap and water.
마틸다는 말했다, “만일 내가 아빠라면, 나는 그것을 비누와 물로 씻어낼 텐데요.
  
But you’ll have to hurry.”
하지만 아빠는 서둘러야만 할걸요.”
 
“Will that change the color back?” the father asked anxiously.
“그게 색깔을 원래대로 바뀌게 할까? 아버지가 걱정스럽게 물었다.
  
“Of course it won’t, you,” the mother said.
“물론 그렇지는 않을 거예요, 당신은,” 엄마가 말했다.
  
“Then what do I do? I can’t go around looking like this forever?”
“그럼 나보고 뭘 하란 거지? 내가 이런 모습으로 영원히 돌아다닐 수는 없잖아?”
 
“You’ll have to dye your hair black,” the mother said.
“당신은 당신의 머리를 검은색으로 염색해야 할 거예요,” 엄마가 말했다.
  
“But wash it first or there won’t be any hair to dye.”
“하지만 그걸 먼저 씻어내요 그렇지 않으면 염색할 머리카락이 하나도 남아나지 않을 테니까요”
 
“Right!” the father shouted, springing into action.
“알았어!” 아버지가 갑자기 행동하면서 소리쳤다.
  
“Get me an appointment with your hair-dresser this instant for a hair-dyeing job!
“지금 당장 머리 염색하게 당신의 미용사와 약속을 잡아!
  
Tell them it’s an emergency!
그들에게 비상사태라고 말해!
 
I’m going upstairs to wash it now!”
나는 지금 그걸 씻어내러 아래층에 갈 거야!“
 
With that the man dashed out of the room and Mrs Wormwood, sighing deeply, went to the telephone to call the beauty salon.
“그러고 나서 그 남자는 방 밖으로 뛰어나갔고 Wormwood 부인은 깊이 숨을 내쉬며 미용실에 전화하기 위해 전화기 쪽으로 갔다.
  
(16) “He does do some pretty silly things now and again, doesn’t he, mummy?” Matilda said.
“그는(아빠는) 이따금씩 몇몇 아주 어리석은 일을 벌이시네요, 그렇지 않아요, 엄마?” 마틸다가 말했다.
  
The mother, dialling the number on the phone, said, “I’m afraid men are not always quite as clever as they think they are.
엄마가 전화기의 숫자를 누르며 말했다, “나는 남자들이 자기네가 그렇다고 생각하는 만큼 아주 항상 영리하지는 않은 것 같구나.
  
You will learn that when you get older, my girl.”
네가 더 나이가 들 때면 너도 알게 될 거다, 얘야.“
